Ask Inara

To all my followers,

I have some great questions in my ask box, and I will answer them! I’ve been helping with an important ceremony at the House and have been quite busy. Thanks for your patience.

Anonymous asked: What made you choose to conduct your business in the Serenity shuttle?

I really just wanted a chance to see the universe.

Anonymous asked: Would you ever retire from being a companion? What would you do in that case?

I wouldn’t predict leaving the Guild in my future as it is now. If I did, the answer to your second question would really depend on the reason I stopped.

Anonymous asked: Why is it that registered companions are respected, whereas whores not in the guild are looked down upon?

That’s a difficult question to answer. I can try to outline why that may be the outside general consensus, but it doesn’t completely reflect my own opinions.

Companions go through intensive training in many different areas, as I’ve said before. We are required to have annual physical exams and expected to continue learning and expanding our horizons after we’ve completed our training. We also pick our clients, and we pick them from a rather large database.

People not associated with the Guild often don’t have these standards. In good cases, they started their training but did not complete it. They sometimes don’t provide all the services a Companion does. Their sessions do not usually contain any sort of psychotherapy or and kind of other entertainment or release. These cases are a difinitive exchange of sex for money, the end.

And that’s why they are looked down upon. Some places are like Nandi’s, which is fairly respectable while still not registered with the Guild. However, other less respectable women have created a stigma that will not go away soon, and people are not concerned with differentiating.

wiccanlove asked: Hello Inara. Just wondering if Mal's still being his ornery self whenever you're around.

It’s never ending, even when I’m not around. Orneriness is in his nature. :)

Anonymous asked: How did you get into the business of being a Companion? Is anyone else in your family a Companion?

Most Companions start training before they even reach adolescence. Being a Companion is so much more than sex, though that’s what most focus on. Some young women with Companion-like qualities, things like high academics and perception, and a certain amount of humanity, are taken aside during grade school and given the suggestion. Others decide for themselves without instigation from anyone. Companions live a lifestyle that many who choose the profession would not be privy to otherwise. The opportunity for high society events and treasures is appealing, as is the simple pleasure of helping others.

In my case, it was a bit of everything. I was told I had the qualities necessary to enter into training. Once the thought entered my head, it was only a matter of time before I made my decision.

Anonymous asked: Are there a specific set of rules that a Companion such as yourself must follow? Thanks! :)

There are certain rules, yes, and even more guidelines. We are required to have a physical exam each year, required to be guild certified in order to be a companion, allowed to choose our own clients, and so on.

We also follow standard practices, things that are not written but common throughout the profession. The Guild isn’t keen on Companions having relationships, for example. We’re also expected to keep up with academics and the arts in which we trained. And, of course, we are to stay emotionally unattached to those we service.

Then there are the traditions we adhere to. Most Companions are Buddhist, or at least are rooted in the religion. There are ceremonies  we have with clients that are standard to most meetings.

askkaylee asked: Thanks 'Nara :) How are ya anyway? seems we haven't talked a while. How's business?

Thriving. :)

I’ll be back on the ship in a few days. I’m doing wonderful, it’s been a relief to be on land for a moment. And to be on a planet where there are clients. The captain keeps taking us further and further into the dark and it’s hurting my business. Sometimes I wonder if he does it on purpose…

That aside, I’m looking forward to being on the ship again and seeing all of you! Do you want something shiny from the core planets?

From what I see, once I’ve returned we will have to have another chat about my relationship with certain crew members. Specifically that it is business only.

Anonymous asked: How did it come to be that everyone speaks some Chinese?

Our language came from the two world powers on earth-that-was that decided to explore space. The two merged and formed what we speak today.

askkaylee asked: Hey 'Nara! Love ya new theme, so pretty :)

Thank you, Kaylee! I was inspired when you changed yours. The strawberries are perfect. :)
